EyeLight®

Our solution to the most common cause of dry eye –
combined light therapy with IPL & LLLT.

Available at Boots Opticians Romsey & Lymington

Combined IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy) is a highly effective treatment for dry eye caused by blocked glands, aka MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction) – the most common cause of dry eye.
Having blocked glands reduces the amount of protective oils your tears receive – and resulting in faster evaporation of tears from the surface of your eye.

Quickly evaporating tears often results in irritation, such as grittiness, stinging or soreness. Faster evaporating tears can also bring about excessive wateriness, as the eye reacts to signals prompting it to keep producing & replacing the continually evapourated tears. Vision may blur, especially with focus on screens, and be highly unstable due to a diminished tear film. Having blocked glands, especially in combination with excess bacteria along the eyelids, can result in recurrent styes, as well as other eye infections.

Given the synergistic benefit of IPL and LLLT together, we almost always provide them as a combined package to best treat blocked glands.

What is EyeLight?

EyeLight, produced by Espansione Group, is our chosen machine for light therapy – it allows us to undertake both IPL and LLLT treatments in store.

We describe both techniques in detail below.

All treatments with EyeLight are designed with comfort in mind and are undertaken by a GOC registered professional. Side effects are extremely minimal, with the techniques backed by clinical studies to demonstrate its positive impact on dry eye disease.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a light-based treatment which uses bright flashes of light in order to rejuvenate the functioning of blocked oil-producing glands along the eyelids.

IPL has been used safely for many years in the skin care industry – since it’s applications for treating eye health have been uncovered, it has become a staple of management of dry eye.

Unlike our competitors, our IPL does not use gel which typically has to be applied to the skin. For this reason, it’s much more comfortable and hassle free.

IPL has been proven to provide long-lasting reliefimproved tear film quality, reduced inflammationand alleviate symptoms of dry eye.

Often we bundle our IPL treatment with LLLT, described below, in order to target the glands with two proven therapies.

LLLT (Low-Level Light Therapy)

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is also known as photobiomodulation, is a light-based treatment that uses specific wavelengths to stimulate the oil-producing the glands along your eyelids into functioning better, working deep into the skin. It has been proven to reduce inflammation, improve tear film quality, and relieve symptoms of dry eye over the long term. LLLT has also been shown to help with reducing the number of Demodex mites along the eyelids.

LLLT alone also shows benefit as a non-invasive way of shrinking chalazions, the longer term cysts that can persist on the eyelid following a stye.

Gland Expression

Unlike some of our competitiors, we include gland expression as standard as apart of our therapies. With our light therapy, we seek to improve gland function via reducing inflammation and melting any solid secretions that may be stuck in oil glands, but we also seek to help these secretions leave the gland itself via gentle prompting with a specialised, comfort-friendly tool, called a gland expressor. This is undertaken via gland expression after any light therapy we perform, in order to maximise the benefits of your treatment with us.

"Having been suffering from very dry and sore eyes, I attended Boots Opticians in New Milton who referred me to the Boots Dry Eye centre in Lymington. There I received a very thorough inspection of my eyes by David. Given their recommendations, I decided to have a course of the light therapy over the next four weeks...

The results were amazing! Even after the first treatment, my eyes felt better and I was not constantly putting drops in my eyes. The treatment was carried out by Ivett, who was very gentle ... and made sure I was happy and comfortable throughout.
I would highly recommend this treatment, and the team!"

We follow the best clinical evidence currently in order to maximise the benefit of these innovative therapies. Treatments with IPL/LLLT are typically (with some leeway) undertaken over the space of four weeks. For those who have not had IPL/LLLT within the last year, we typically advise a block of four treatments of IPL/LLLT, combined with gland expression & initial eyelid cleaning – which is provided as standard.

The cost of 4 sessions of both IPL/LLLT, combined with gland expression and an included free follow-up with your optometrist (to review results and make an onward recommendation) is £700. We believe our treatment to be underpriced compared to our competitors, just so as many people as possible can benefit.

*Competitor comparison current as of market research undertaken March 2026, comparing like-for-like treatments vs competitors also offering dry eye services.
