Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs are a highly effective therapy for dry eye caused by the eye producing too few tears. This can be the result of health conditions (such as Sjorden’s Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis), medications (e.g. anti-depressants or contraceptives), or just due to the ageing process. Low tears can also affect those without any risk factors, as apart of the broad spectrum that makes up dry eye disease.
Each lower eyelid has a tear drainage area, the punctum, at the side of the eye closest to the nose. This is responsible for up to 70% of tear volume. Reducing the amount of tears that escape the eye through this channel increases the amount of tears that could instead be providing comfort to your eye!
The insertion of punctal plugs is a easy process. It causes zero discomfort, and can take less than 30 seconds to complete.
We offer both self-dissolvable and semi-permanent options in our stores.
Dissolvable Plugs
Dissolvable plugs are often the best option for those starting out. We offer both 3 monthly and 6 monthly dissolvable plugs. These self-dissolvable plugs are naturally broken down by the tears surrounding it, meaning there is no need for removal. A fresh plug can be inserted as often as required. Many of our patients start out with a 3 monthly plug, then progressing to a 6 monthly or a yearly (see below) replacement plug once they’ve had success!
Our dissolvable plugs sit a little deeper in the punctum than our yearly replacement plugs. This reduces the risk of accidentally removing the plug yourself by rubbing eyes, etc. The process of fitting a dissolvable plug is extremely comfortable!
365 Day Plugs
Our yearly replacement plugs are often the choice of patients who have already tried a dissolvable plug, but some may opt for these straight away. They sit a little higher in the punctum, and provide a longer duration of relief from dry eye symptoms – given they last a whole year, fewer visits are required to replace them.
The process of fitting a yearly plug is – much like our dissolvable plugs – quick, easy, and comfortable. And just for peace of mind – they are fully reversible, meaning we can remove the plug if you are having any difficulty – however unlikely this is!
All types of plugs are available at Wimborne, Romsey and Lymington. If you have any questions, or wish to book in for this treatment, please contact us by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.
