LM LLMT / Photobiomodulation
for dry AMD @ Boots Opticians Romsey
sight in those with early to intermediate dry AMD
At Wessex Optical, we love innovative technology, and have been treating macular degeneration since February 2026. We use the novel treatment called EyeLight® from Espansione group.
This exciting new treatment utilises photobiomodulation, the only proven treatment to show a benefit in dry macular degeneration, reliably. While most interventions are lifestyle/diet related to slow down progression, EyeLight® frequently halts progression, and in some cases reverses aspects of the condition!*
Treatment is safe, comfortable and relaxing to have done.
Dry Macula Degeneration
Macula degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible sight loss in the developed world. It typically occurs in those over the age of 50, and affects the area at the back of the eye responsible for your detailed vision, in a progressive fashion.
Macula degeneration involves dysfunction of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) within the eye, which results in an accumulation of waste products (called “drusen”), which contribute towards the disease process. Overall, damage in macula degeneration is due to a combination of oxidative stress, cell loss, mitochondrial dysfunction & inflammation.
What does the treatment involve?
The treatment utilises a light based therapy, using very specific wavelengths, strengths & radiances, undertaken over a 12 minute exposure period. These lights appear yellow & red, administered by wearing a comfortable mask, imaged to the right.
These lights stimulate ATP production in cells, reduce oxidative stress & reduce inflammation.
Treatment is twice a week for 4 weeks, with a total of 8 sessions. Both eyes are treated at the same time.
Do I need the treatment again, or once only?
It is recommended that the treatment is performed every six months, but follow-up treatments are only six sessions instead of eight. These follow-up sessions are undertaken twice a week for three weeks.
This frequency is based on the study procotols used by the company who manufacture the machine. Deviation from this is not recommended, as there is limited evidence to support a increased or reduced frequency.
However, we all have busy lives – so we can be flexible on this procotol when requested – we’re happy to cater to your requests!
Results of Photobiomodulation & Side Effects
While there is no cure for dry macula degeneration, light therapy aims to slow down its’ progression. Clinical studies have shown that EyeLight can reduce central drusen (waste product) volume, and in some cases improve best corrected vision, as well as contrast sensitivity.
Some of those in the study showed no improvement; as with any treatment, results are variable – but we have good data to recommend EyeLight® to anyone with mild to moderate dry AMD.
Are there side effects or safety concerns?
The light is intense, so might leave your dazzled briefly afterwards – but will not stop you from driving or any other activities you might have after the appointment.
Due to the intensity of the light, it is recommended to wear sun protection during and two weeks after the treatment.
For this same reason, patients taking medication that makes them sensitive to light (not U/V – the treatment does not use such) – are not suitable for this treatment.
Will I be monitored before/after treatment?
Before the treatment, you will have a consultation with one of our macular degeneration trained optometrists, who will discuss your current macula condition, and likelihood of progression with/without treatment, as well as answering any questions you may have.
Typically, we perform a diagnostic scan of your macula (using OCT) at the consultation, just before the final treatment, and four months after treatment.
I only have dry macula degeneration in one eye - can I have the treatment?
The treatment is safe, so it can be performed on an eye that does not have dry macula degeneration, or has degeneration too advanced to see benefit. If you would prefer, we can place a shield over an eye we aren’t treating, to prevent any exposure to the light.
